Impermanence of Life

Image courtesy: https://www.urban-wellness.ca/ The inspiration for this article comes from an incident that took place two days ago. It shook me on so many levels, but something unique happened today. First, let's revisit what happened two days ago. My laptop was stolen with all my data and some other belongings, which, like anyone else, left me all heartbroken and shattered. I am aspiring to be a PhD scholar, which meant that my laptop had all my relevant files and information. With all that gone, I had to get a new laptop immediately because my work couldn't be halted for long due to a project commitment. Cut to what happened today. I was travelling to my workplace for my project, and while I was about to get down from my metro, I saw a laptop bag that looked exactly like my old stolen one. I felt terrible looking at it. The feelings were very overwhelming because it reminded me of my old laptop and its connected memories. But that very minute, another thought crossed my mind

Adult Separation Anxiety

Image
Featured Image Courtesy: https://www.calmsage.com / Anxiety is a very layman word for most of us and we use it to replace words like tension, uneasiness, inconvenience etc. I do not discredit the intensity of emotions experienced in any of the latter states, but anxiety is much and beyond all of these states taken together. But today I would like to talk about a very specific kind of anxiety: Separation Anxiety or Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD). A lot of us have heard it majorly in the context of children but a lot of it sometimes gets carried to our adulthood. Adults are equally susceptible to Separation Anxiety and unlike the majority of childhood cases of Separation Anxiety, it may be concerning anyone in an adult’s life. This piece is not to talk about the clinical grounds of Separation Anxiety but more of what churns in the heart of someone with the same.  As a child sometimes we don’t find the right words to articulate what goes inside us, but as an adult too, sometimes de

Accepting an Absolute Philosophy or Exploring Multiple Realities?

Image
Featured image courtesy nation.lk In a recent discussion with a close friend, we were pondering over the philosophy or art of love. To which, she said, that she recently came across a philosopher’s view on what loving someone truly means and that made her question her own notion of love. The philosopher's view alone felt true and non-variable now, against the years of personal experience, books or content that had contributed to her concept of love. The philosophy she encountered was that love is about being selfless, sacrificial, and giving unto someone without expectations in return. And this is something which she had seldom seen in others, let alone herself. This led me to think that is a philosophy or more generally, a working theory enough and more, to dictate our notions about such a concept which has the depth and width of an ocean. This conjoined me to another line of thought i.e. Is it about accepting a well-known philosophy or being receptive to different perspectives th

Faith: A Journey from Disbelief to Belief

Image
The very essence of the word 'Faith' is Belief about self, or others, or in the existence of a higher power in the universe. There are so many popular beliefs about faith in different forms and existence. In my understanding, it is one of the many positive words that we come across in so many motivational and life transitioning speeches of some of the successful people we know. At that moment, we may feel a rush of abundant faith and positivity down our bodies. Our mind may be filled with all-conquering thoughts, but it’s just a matter of time when we start experiencing the earlier feelings of dismay and disbelief. I am sure all of us have experienced this time and again.  For all of us, this journey of faith is not an easy one. As far as my understanding goes, it all starts within. So many times, we fail to make sense of why we are not able to put our faith in people and situations despite our familiarity with them. Before we struggle any further and ponder on how to overcom

Flip Side of Expertise

Image
Experts and their expertise is perceived by the majority of us as an all desirable quality of an individual. Experts are individuals with specialised knowledge in their functional area(s). Experts have talents or special abilities to perform the skills associated with their expertise with utmost brilliance and at a negligible rate of error. Now, let’s hold this thought and ponder if this is really the case? Are experts always right and 'know-it-all'? With this article, I would like to draw the light to alternate and less acknowledged realities about being an expert. Experts are individuals with great depth and breadth of knowledge, acquired and developed through years of practice, research, and experience in their respective areas. But with all these positives, a few negatives are also complimentary in their journey.     Knowledge Chunking : Something that distinguishes an expert and a novice is the unconscious process of knowledge chunking by experts. Dose of Self-positivity for better management of corporate affairs

The unprecedented times have called for a revolution in how things were carried out in our professional spheres. These transitions have not only demanded the organisations to change their style of working but also the employees to become more adaptive and show positive dynamism. But there is a question that all the professionals should ask themselves, which is, “Is this change a feeling of positivity or negativity for me?”. Reflecting on this, many of us would realise that in many ways this constant spree of changes is taking a toll on our mental health. Unable to see an end to uncertain times, though at an unconscious level our brain is accepting these hazy times, at the same time it is not very sure of what clear course of action to take. Also, the locus of control of the majority of events being external, no matter how much you or I think about it, little can we do to change them. This calls for a  Dose of Self-positivity , especially for the people operating in highly demanding cor
